Description

The rectangular slot roller shell is a fundamental groove design for pellet mill rollers, featuring through straight grooves with a rectangular cross-section. The groove walls are perpendicular to the roller surface, with a flat bottom and right-angle edges on both sides. This structure provides the strongest material gripping capability and the largest groove volume, making it particularly suitable for high-compression-ratio, high-density, high-capacity pelleting applications such as hard wood chip pellets, straw pellets, and industrial waste pelletizing.

Q: What are the inherent weaknesses of rectangular slot roller shells in terms of stress distribution, and how can they be compensated through design?
A: The right-angle groove bottom and groove edge corners are typical geometric stress concentration zones, highly prone to fatigue crack initiation under cyclic compression loads. Compensation measures include: replacing the right-angle groove bottom with an R0.5-1.0mm radius, reducing the stress concentration factor by approximately 40%; using quench + low-temperature tempering to obtain a tempered martensite structure, improving fracture toughness; limiting the groove depth-to-width ratio to no more than 0.6 to avoid the cantilever beam effect caused by excessively deep grooves.

A: Two material types stand out. The first is coarse fiber materials requiring high compaction density (e.g., coconut shell charcoal feedstock) – the maximum groove volume of rectangular slots accommodates fiber bundles without clogging. The second is wet materials with moisture content as high as 18%-22% – the vertical groove walls generate a stronger dewatering compression effect, rapidly expelling free water through the die holes and preventing die blinding.
