In modern feed processing industry, the feed extruder plays an increasingly important role. Through the combined action of high temperature, high pressure, and mechanical shearing force, the extruder converts raw materials such as corn, soybean meal, and fishmeal into porous, expanded, and easily digestible pellets. Extrusion not only improves the physical properties of feed but also significantly enhances nutrient absorption efficiency in animals.

1. Basic Principle of Feed Extrusion

The working principle of a feed extruder is to feed ingredients into the extruder barrel. Under the mixing and compression of steam, water, heat, and the screw, the material temperature rises to 120–180°C, and pressure reaches 3–10 MPa. When the material is instantly expelled through the die holes, the pressure drops sharply, and water evaporates rapidly, forming a structure with numerous internal micropores. This process increases starch gelatinization to over 90%, denatures proteins, and effectively inactivates anti-nutritional factors (such as urease and trypsin inhibitors).

2. Main Types of Feed Extruders

Based on structure, feed extruders can be divided into single-screw extruders and twin-screw extruders:

  • Single-screw extruder: simple structure and lower cost, suitable for producing conventional aquafeed, pet food, and some livestock feed. Ideal for small and medium-sized feed mills.

  • Twin-screw extruder: better mixing, conveying, and self-cleaning capabilities, suitable for materials with high oil or high moisture content. Provides high extrusion uniformity. Ideal for large plants and high-value specialty feeds (e.g., premium ornamental fish feed, shrimp feed, young pet food).

  1. Improved digestibility
    After extrusion, starch is gelatinized and protein structure is loosened, increasing animal digestibility by 10–30% and significantly improving feed conversion ratio (FCR).

  2. Better water stability
    Extruded aquafeed can remain stable in water for 12–24 hours or more, reducing feed loss and preventing water pollution.

  3. Hygiene and sterilization
    The high-temperature and high-pressure process effectively kills harmful microorganisms such as Salmonella and E. coli, reducing the risk of animal diseases.

  4. Controllable floatability and sinkability
    By adjusting density, floating, slow-sinking, and sinking feeds can be produced to meet the feeding habits of different species (e.g., fish, shrimp, crabs, turtles).

  5. Flexible formulation
    Extrusion allows the use of more plant proteins and by-products, replacing part of the fishmeal and lowering feed costs.

4. Applications of Feed Extruders

  • Aquaculture: produce floating fish feed, sinking shrimp and crab feed, sturgeon feed, suitable for both marine and freshwater aquaculture.

  • Pet food: produce dog food, cat food, ornamental fish food, with attractive appearance and good palatability.

  • Specialty animal feed: such as fur animal feed, ornamental bird feed, turtle feed.

  • Livestock and poultry feed: some preconditioned feeds or starter feeds for piglets and dairy calves, improving early intake and growth performance.

5. How to Choose the Right Feed Extruder?

  • Based on capacity: from tens of kilograms to over ten tons per hour – match the extruder to the farm or mill scale.

  • Based on material characteristics: high-starch materials suitable for single-screw; high-fat or sticky materials recommended for twin-screw.

  • Based on product requirements: for high floatability, high uniformity or special shapes, choose models with automatic temperature control and custom dies.

  • Equipment material and energy consumption: prioritize alloy steel barrels and wear-resistant screws, equipped with intelligent control systems to reduce energy consumption per ton.

6. Maintenance and Care Tips

Regularly check screw and liner wear, clean die deposits, and keep the lubrication system clear. After use, clean residual material promptly to prevent mold and clogging. It is recommended to perform professional maintenance every six months, replacing wear parts (e.g., cutting knives, dies, bushings) to ensure stable extrusion performance.
